What is Sustainable Commercial Laundry – A Beginner's Guide

The commercial laundry industry has long been overlooked in terms of its environmental impact, contributing significant greenhouse gas emissions and wastewater pollution. Traditional laundry methods involve excessive water and energy use, releasing harmful microplastics and toxic chemicals into the environment. In contrast, Oxwash employs innovative technologies like microfibre filters and biodegradable detergents to reduce emissions, conserve water, and eliminate pollutants. By constantly innovating, we aim to set new standards for the industry, proving that sustainable laundry can reduce its carbon footprint and help build a cleaner future.

Laundry tips

This guide aims to unravel the complexities of sustainable commercial laundry, focusing on how we at Oxwash are pioneering change to minimise its impact on our planet.

Understanding the impact

The textile cleaning industry, an essential part of our daily lives, has long operated under the radar of environmental scrutiny. However, a recent study commissioned by Oxwash has cast a revealing light on its substantial greenhouse gas emissions, particularly concerning the washing of clothes both at home and in commercial laundry.

The numbers are staggering. In Europe alone, home laundry contributes a hefty 15.3 megatons of CO2e, a figure equivalent to the carbon footprint of one million flights in and out of the UK. Commercial laundry, a significant player in industrial carbon emissions, leaves an 8.8 megaton carbon footprint in Europe, representing 1% of the continent's industrial carbon emissions. Moreover, the process of washing garments demands copious amounts of water, leading to wastewater pollution rife with microplastics and potentially toxic chemicals.

The environmental toll of traditional laundry

Traditional laundry methods have long been synonymous with excessive water and heat usage, resulting in elevated emissions and the release of microplastics and toxic chemicals into our oceans. Oxwash acknowledges the urgency of minimising this environmental impact and is determined to redefine industry standards.

How does sustainable commercial laundry work?

At Oxwash, we were founded with a commitment to proving that textile cleaning can be done with no net impact on ecosystems and communities, we are challenging industry norms and exploring groundbreaking technologies to change the laundry sector for good.

Through rigorous efforts, we have managed to wash garments without emissions, reduce waste, and prioritise the well-being of both employees and local communities. But how does it work?

Pioneering solutions

In 2022 alone, we managed to save 139 tonnes of CO2 and preserved 4600 m3 of drinking water by challenging the status quo. Our cleaning technology uses water and biodegradable detergents instead of the carcinogenic solvents found in traditional dry cleaning. This not only ensures safer and longer-lasting garments but also eliminates the harmful environmental impact associated with conventional methods.

A key advancement in our quest for sustainability is the development of innovative microfibre filters, a collaborative effort with partners Cleaner Seas Group. These filters aim to reduce microfibre and plastic release by an impressive 99%.

Constant innovation for a cleaner future

The journey towards sustainable commercial laundry doesn't stop there. To remain as sustainable as possible, we need continuous innovation. That means constantly exploring new technologies to minimise gas, water, and waste in every aspect of our operations. By doing so, we not only drive positive change within the laundry industry but contribute significantly to building a more sustainable future.
